frames
Not every frame has to be built. Some are standing ready - borrowed for an exhibition, or taken on for good.
Two routes
Frames from our workshop are available in two ways. On loan, where a frame is needed for the duration of an exhibition and goes back afterwards. And by sale, where it is to stay with you permanently - for a particular work or as an object in its own right.
Which route is right depends less often on money than on the task. For a temporary exhibition in which a work is shown differently on one occasion, a loan is the obvious answer. For a work in the permanent collection being reframed for good, a loan is not worth the arrangement.
Loans for exhibitions
For a loan we settle the same points you know from any loan transaction: the period including installation and dismantling, transport route and packing, insurance value and cover, environmental conditions at the venue, and a condition report on handover and return. We provide the details of material, construction and dimensions that you need for the loan agreement and the insurance.
Where a frame is needed for a particular work, send us the dimensions and thickness of the support - we will then say whether something suitable exists or whether building new would be the quicker route.
Frames for sale
What is sold is what has arisen in small editions or been built as a single piece. Every frame is unique; two pieces of the same profile resemble one another but are not identical. For each frame we state the timber, the construction, the outer dimensions, the rebate size and the sight width, together with the nature of the surface.
If you are looking for a frame for an existing work, the rebate size is the decisive figure - not the outer dimension. Send us the dimensions of the support and we will check what fits.
The stock changes
What stands above is the position today; what is available is only ever what is finished and standing in the workshop. Beyond that, enquire with your actual task - dimensions, occasion, period. We answer with what is genuinely there, and we say so when nothing fits and building new would be the better route.
Loan
For the duration of an exhibition. Period, transport, insurance and condition report are settled in advance.
Sale
Permanent acquisition of an existing frame, with timber, construction and all dimensions stated.
New build instead
If nothing fits we say so - and set out the route via a commission, with a timescale.

Mirror frame with ripple and plaited mouldings
A stepped build: ripple moulding, plaited band, corded and rounded beads and a squared band run side by side and meet at the corners. The piece was made in our workshop.
It is available as a loan for an exhibition and equally for permanent sale.

On loan to museums

Dimensions, timber and surface on request. To check whether the frame suits a particular work, the rebate size of your support is the starting point in any case.
Frequently asked questions
The rebate size decides, not the outer dimension: that is, the height and width of the support and its thickness. For panels, also whether the panel is flat or has developed a curve. With those details we can say within minutes whether an existing frame comes into question.
In principle yes. As with any loan it depends on transport, insurance and the conditions at the venue. Approach us early - the sooner the frame is in the planning, the simpler the arrangement.
For museums, nothing. We charge no loan fee. The borrowing institution bears carriage both ways and insures the frame for the duration of the loan; the period is six months at a time. Give us the dates and the venue and we will settle the rest.
As a rule yes. It happens where an exhibition shows that frame and work belong together. Speak to us and we will settle it for the particular case.
