Made-to-measure furniture earns its keep above all where the room will not cooperate: under the eaves, in the recess, around the projection.
Where made to measure genuinely pays
A free-standing sideboard you can buy anywhere. A joiner becomes interesting where standard sizes fail: under sloping ceilings, in older buildings with uneven walls, around radiators and projections, in narrow hallways, in rooms of unusual height. There a bespoke piece recovers storage a stock cabinet cannot reach - and it looks as though it was built with the house.
The second case is matching what is already there. When a piece has to sit with an interior that has grown over time, it is a question of timber, colour and finish - and sometimes of faithfully reproducing an individual part. That is one of our strengths.
Solid timber, veneer or board
Solid timber is real timber all the way through. It can be sanded, refurbished and will last generations - in return it moves with the indoor climate and needs a construction that allows for it. Veneer is a thin layer of real timber on a stable substrate: more dimensionally stable over large areas and lighter, but only sandable to a limited degree. Laminate merely imitates timber.
We work predominantly in solid timber and good veneer, and will tell you for each component what makes sense. A wide solid timber wardrobe door is not the wiser choice in every indoor climate - decisions like that we do not make across the board.
Built so the timber may move
Timber swells in damp air and shrinks in dry. This movement is not a weakness but a property of the material - furniture simply has to be built to withstand it. That is exactly what distinguishes joinery: joints that allow movement without gaps opening or panels cupping.
Solid timber is happiest at roughly 45 to 60 per cent relative humidity. If heated rooms get considerably drier in winter, plants or a humidifier help. For rooms with underfloor heating, or radiators nearby, we allow for that in the construction.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Almost everything we produce is a one-off made to your dimensions and wishes. A single table or a fitted wardrobe is as welcome as a complete interior. It starts with a conversation, usually followed by a survey on site.
That is one of our strengths. We match timber, colour and finish so that new furniture sits with what you have, up to faithfully reproducing individual parts. If you can, bring a sample piece or a drawer - that makes the matching considerably more accurate.
In most cases yes, and that is one of the great advantages over laminated board. Fine scratches in oiled surfaces can be sanded and re-oiled so they effectively disappear. Even deeper dents can often be lifted with moisture and heat. Lacquered or veneered pieces take more work; we handle that too.
In principle yes, but it should have air underneath - closed plinths directly on a warm floor are unfavourable. Equally, keep about 30 cm from a radiator so the timber does not dry out on one side and split. Tell us which room the piece is for and we will allow for it in the construction.
